Let’s Talk about Bridal Alterations
We know that most wedding dresses need a little love to fit you just right, whether it’s minor adjustments or customisation.
Our brides often have questions about the alteration process, what happens if you lose or gain weight, and so much more. So, we asked Mira from Mira’s Tailoring to cover all your FAQs!
Think of this as your friendly guide to all thing’s alterations!
When is the best time to book an appointment with a seamstress?
We recommend booking your alterations appointment as soon as you’ve purchased your gown. Ideally, secure your slot three to six months before the wedding. This allows enough time for fittings, adjustments, and any customisation work without feeling rushed.
How far in advance of the wedding will the first fitting be?
Your first fitting typically takes place eight to twelve weeks before the wedding. This timing provides enough room for alterations to be completed gradually, ensuring your gown fits perfectly as your big day approaches.
How many appointments will a bride need for standard alterations, and what is the process?
Most brides require two to three fittings:
First fitting - Once you have the gown on, the areas that need adjusting will be pinned, and any customisation will be discussed.
Second fitting - We will check that you are happy with the adjustments that have been made and refine areas such as straps, bust support, and hemline.
Final fitting - After all alterations have been completed this is your chance to try your gown on and ensure you are satisfied before taking the gown home in preparation for your special day.
Top tips before your first fitting
Bring the exact shoes you’ll wear on your wedding day, as hem length depends on them. If you would like to wear shapewear, a bra or corset bring these with you also, as these will affect the gown's fit and silhouette.
To protect the gown from stains, it’s best to wear minimal makeup to each fitting.
If you would like to bring your veil or jewellery to see the complete look you are more than welcome to do so.
Customisation
If you’d like any customisation carried out such as adding sleeves, changing necklines, or incorporating lace please get in touch at least four to six months before the wedding. It’s best to visit before your scheduled fittings so we can assess the gown, discuss design ideas, and order any additional fabric or trims in time.
Weight changes and alterations
Life happens, and bodies change. If you lose or gain weight, we can usually adjust the gown by taking it in or letting it out by up to two dress sizes. Beyond that, alterations become more complex but are often still possible with creative tailoring.
For brides who experience dramatic weight loss after purchasing their gown ie. four dress sizes, alterations are still feasible, but they may require restructuring the gown. This can involve reshaping seams, rebuilding bodices, or adding new panels.
We recommend that you book a consultation as soon as possible to enable us to assess your gown. In most cases we can take the dress in however it will be more of a partial redesign than a simple alteration and therefore will take a little bit more time.
